Research Trainee Positions (M.D. or Ph.D. postdoctoral level) in Translational Neuroscience/Pain Research and in Neurogenomics: Foreign medical graduates to be considered

Up to three positions for Research Trainees are available at Mayo Clinic in the laboratory of Dr. Andreas Beutler, who holds appointments in the Departments of Oncology and Anesthesiology, the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, and the Mayo Graduate School Research Track in Translational Science.

Mayo Clinic is located in Rochester, MN, and is presently the #1 hospital in the USA (outranking Harvard’s MGH and Johns Hopkins):

Two positions will be available in translational pain research focusing on the development of gene therapy- and toxin-based novel treatments for chronic pain and testing in large animal models. Training includes work in the fields of molecular biology, neuropathology, large animal model development, bioengineering, and the methodology of experimental design and statistical analysis as well as writing of scientific publications for high-ranking, peer-reviewed journals. These positions are most suitable for candidates with an interest in translational research including the development of surgical procedures in large animal models.

An additional Research Trainee position will focus on neurogenomics with an option to branch out into the field of cancer genomics. In this area, training will focus on massively parallel high throughput short read sequencing and the bioinformatics- and statistical methods required for the analysis of large genomic datasets. This position is most suitable for a candidate with a quantitative training background (mathematics, computer science) or with an extremely strong commitment to basic research in genomics.

Foreign medical graduates will be considered, if they have competitive USMLE scores and/or other exceptional achievements, show initiative, and are committed to a period of extremely hard work. The research training will support applications for future clinical residency training in various specialties including anesthesiology, neurology, neurosurgery, PM&R, and internal medicine and its subspecialties.

The training positions are available immediately, because successful trainees will be leaving the Beutler laboratory this summer. The leader and principal investigator (PI) of the laboratory, Dr. Beutler, is a physician scientist who transitioned as foreign medical graduate into the American academic system. He has Ph.D.-level training in basic neuroscience, gene therapy, and genomics, while he is also a practicing clinician holding American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) board certifications in internal medicine and oncology/hematology. Former trainees of the Beutler laboratory include well over a dozen medical students and physicians who have proceeded to successful careers in research or clinical training at leading international and US universities.

The positions of Research Trainee will be unpaid and limited in duration for 1 year. Once the Research Trainee has reached the level of training, where s/he can productively contribute to the research and can lead his/her own project, a a fully paid postdoc position will considered.

If interested, please, send you CV and a short email describing your background, motivation, and goals to:

For additional personal background information, you may also contact the most recent graduate of the Beutler lab, Dr. Josef Pleticha. He is a foreign graduate who trained in the Beutler lab for 4 years and then matched (on 3/16/2015) into the Anesthesiology residency program at Duke University, which is one of the most prestigious research-oriented medical schools in the US.
